The "Greensburg Rebirth" project team members gather for a group photo in the basement of the Haviland Friends Church where they stayed during the first week of the project.
About Us 2008 Last Updated: May 26, 2009
Seventeen of us from Wichita State University are in Greensburg for two weeks to write stories and shoot photographs and videos for Kansas newspapers.
We moved from the basement of the Friends Church in Haviland, 10 miles east of Greensburg, to a class room at Barclay College in Haviland.
Our goal is to look for stories that haven't been done. We'll also be producing audio for two Wichita radio stations (KFDI - 1070 AM - and KMUW - 89.1 FM) and for slide shows that can be used on newspapers' Web sites.
We are working with the assistance of Cort Anderson, technology consultant for the Kansas Press Association. Cort has logged numerous hours in Greensburg, from taking photos for Kansas newspapers immediately after the tornado hit Greensburg last May to creating a Web site to help coordinate volunteer efforts for the South Central Kansas Tornado Recovery Organization.
Students in the class are Jelena Petrovic, Dana Dinkel, Annie Cook, Nicole Hess, Ashley Arnold, Roni Ayalla, Candice Tullis, Kristina Kapaun, Quinn Addis, Ashley Stone, Ian Crane, Todd Vogts, Patrick Vera, Matt Heilman and Andrea Molinari.
Please be patient with us as we will be posting stories and photos to this site daily through June 7, so check back often for new content.
Quinn Addis
Quinn Addis graduated from Derby High School in 2006, where she was active in the student journalism and mass communications programs. Unsure of what to study in college, she was undecided when she entered Wichita State University in the fall of 2006. Eventually, Addis decided to pursue her love of mass media and communication through an Integrated Marketing Communication emphasis in WSU's Elliott School of Communication. After graduation, she is interested in pursuing graduate studies in the form of a law degree or a master’s degree in Communication.

Annie Cook
My collegiate career began at the University of Tennessee at Martin, where I completed two years while playing soccer on scholarship. I then moved back to Kansas to continue playing soccer at Baker University. At Baker, I wrote for The Baker Orange, and I helped in the production of a sports broadcast, Wildcat Chat. I moved back to Wichita in January 200, and I am now attending Wichita State University. I am planning on graduating this December with an open emphasis in print and broadcasting.
Ian Crane
I graduated from Wichita State University in the spring and the Greensburg Rebirth project will fulfill my final three hours. I'm a Communication major with an emphasis in Electronic Media. I was glad that Les provided me the opportunity to be a part of this class. I couldn't ask for a better way to finish college. My knowledge with video and audio should be an asset for the group, and I'm glad to be a part of this special project.
Dana Dinkel
My name is Dana Dinkel and I’m from Derby, Kan., located just south of Wichita. I’m 21 years old and recently graduated from Wichita State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication. I plan to pursue a master’s degree in public administration this fall after filling a temporary news writer position for WSU’s media department from July to October. I’m recently engaged and plan to wed in May 2009, and I am looking forward to tracking the rebirth of Greensburg.
Matt Heilman
I am a senior at Wichita State University emphasizing in print journalism with my Communication major. I am a sports reporter for the WSU student newspaper, The Sunflower News. Andrea Molinari
Hi! I am Andrea Molinari. I am a graduate student at Wichita State University’s Elliott School of Communication. I got my bachelor’s degree in communication with an emphasis in print journalism. I just completed an internship at The Wichita Eagle and will be moving on to my next project next month — an internship at the Kansas Health Institute in Topeka.
Jelena Petrovic
My home country is Serbia, but for more than four years, I have been living and studying at Wichita State University where I came at the age of 21. I am currently a first-year graduate student and teaching assistant in the Elliott School of Communication, where I also earned my bachelor’s degree. Witnessing political instability in my country shaped my belief that a true journalist needs to seek the truth to educate and lead the society.
Ashley Stone
I was born and raised on a farm in rural Nebraska. I came to Wichita State University for its incredible internship and cooperative education programs, and, as a soon to be junior, I am double majoring in Integrated Marketing Communications and Sport Administration. I chose these two majors because my goal is to become the Director of Marketing/Community Affairs for the Chicago Bulls. This summer I will again work for the PGA as the Operations Assistant for the 90th PGA Championship.

I am a junior at Wichita State University majoring in communication with a print journalism emphasis. I am currently working as Webmaster and Multimedia Editor at The Sunflower News, WSU's student newspaper. I am also a page designer and copy editor at The Wichita Eagle. I enjoy writing, photography and page design and hope to broaden my portfolio in Greensburg.

I am going to be a junior at Wichita State University next fall semester. I came to Greensburg because I am interested in doing video stories about the people of Greensburg because I am interested in doing video stories about the people of Greensburg and their lives following last spring's devastating tornado.
